The position of successor, while offering protection, may also carry an aspect that can sometimes lead to misunderstandings. Our veteran employees, precisely because they cared about me, would introduce me to vendors and business partners as “This is our third-generation successor.” It was the classic situation of being carried on a palanquin. While this itself was truly appreciated, I misunderstood it at the time and started acting as if I lived by my title and position. I must have looked very intimidating, and those around me were probably walking on eggshells.
