HISTORY
Founded in 1961 as a parking lot and rental housing management company,
Takagi Building has continued to evolve,
adapting to changing perspectives on the value of office buildings
while holding fast to the belief that aspirations create new value.
Founding Period
1961
The Takagi family, which had been landlords before the war, lost approximately 90% of their land holdings due to the post-war Agricultural Land Reform. Unlike those in the iron or textile industries, landlords did not possess technical skills. With a firm belief in prudent management and a determination to protect the family by making the most of the remaining land, Hideo Takagi—founder of the company and grandfather of current president Hidekuni Takagi—established Takagi Building Co., Ltd. in April 1961 (Showa 36). The company began as a parking lot and rental house management business, carrying out the aggregation and preparation of land for building development. Through years of effort, the long-awaited first development, the former Toranomon Takagi Building, was completed in April 1970 (Showa 45). This marked the beginning of the full-scale history of Takagi Building.

Growth Period
1980
Between 1980 (Showa 55) and 1993 (Heisei 5), new buildings continued to be constructed: Musashisakai Daiichi Takagi Building, Fuchu Takagi Building, Musashisakai Daini Takagi Building, Nishi-Shinjuku Takagi Building, Gyoen Takagi Building, Osaki Takagi Building, and Mitaka Takagi Building. Although this was the height of the bubble economy, Takagi Building not only developed on their own land but also actively cooperated with land readjustment and land acquisition projects in Musashino and Fuchu cities. They contributed land to help create station-front rotaries and engaged in community-minded urban development. This era also saw the fostering of the “Takagi spirit,” inherited by second-generation president Kunio Takagi, which placed importance not only on prudent building management but also on consideration for the lives of the people living in each community.

Deliberation Period
1993
After the Mitaka Takagi Building was completed in September 1993 (Heisei 5), no new buildings were constructed for a while. The collapse of the bubble economy and events such as the 1995 Hanshin–Awaji Earthquake made it a difficult era for the real estate industry. Nevertheless, Takagi Building remained committed to office buildings, even when other options—such as restaurant buildings or hotels—were available. Instead of short-term profit swings, the company focused on office buildings that promised long-term stability. This led to an emphasis on ideas that addressed what tenants would need to use the buildings for many years. With a long-term vision spanning 50 to 100 years, the company completed its largest office building to date, the earthquake-resistant Kayabacho Takagi Building, in November 2002 (Heisei 14). As management stabilized and construction costs were expected to be recouped quickly, Hidekuni Takagi, who joined the company that same year and is now the third-generation president, began planning the reconstruction of the former Toranomon Takagi Building, which had an outdated seismic structure.

Evolution Period
2011
The former Toranomon Takagi Building began demolition in 2010, finishing in 2011—just as the Great East Japan Earthquake struck. In the aftermath, imported construction materials became scarce, and even sourcing JIS-certified bolts proved difficult. However, honoring the founder’s commitment to prudence, Takagi Building prioritized obtaining reliable materials, even if it meant delaying construction. In 2014 (Heisei 26), the long-awaited new Toranomon Takagi Building was completed. Following this, Osaki Takagi Building and Gyoen Takagi Building were sold to secure funding, enabling the acquisition of Kanda Takagi Building (formerly NK Daiichi Building) in 2016 (Heisei 28); Azabujuban Takagi Building (formerly Inagawa Ryoichi Store Building) in March 2018 (Heisei 30); and Ginza Takagi Building (formerly Ariga Photo Studio Building) in November 2018 (Heisei 30). Simultaneously, the company announced a series of new initiatives that would later evolve into the life-creation brand “BIRTH,” including the Growth-Oriented Free-Working Office "BIRTH WORK", the Mixed-Use Residence "BIRTH IN-RESIDENCE", and the Next-Generation Success-Building Project.Rather than merely maintaining old buildings, Takagi Building continues to pursue possibilities aligned with contemporary needs.

Co-Creation Period
2022
We entered into comprehensive partnership agreements with local governments nationwide, starting with the city of Nobeoka in Miyazaki Prefecture. We launched our Co-creation initiative to connect people with regions and urban centers with rural areas, applying the expertise we gained from operating coworking spaces to benefit local communities. In 2023, we completed the Ginza Takagi Building, expanding the possibilities for using timber in urban environments. This new endeavor, featuring a high-rise hybrid timber structure, earned numerous accolades, including the Wood Design Award and the Forestry Agency Director-General Award, offering a model for sustainable urban development through architecture. The following year, 2024, saw the grand opening of SALON 91° within the Ginza Takagi Building, a cross-industry collaborative project featuring a sauna and dining complex. As the TAKAGI GROUP flagship, the Ginza Takagi Building became a new hub for co-creation, fusing the concepts of working, gathering, and broadcasting. We also expanded our activities to connect people, information, and ideas, including the establishment of the General Incorporated Association JCCO to foster community and create added value, as well as the launch of our podcast, "Gensen Radio." In 2025, our circle of co-creation expanded both domestically and internationally. We advanced partnerships with the city of Yamagata and the town of Hokuei in Tottori Prefecture, engaged in startup support initiatives in Finland and Taiwan, and launched BIRTH STAY, an accommodation business connecting regions with people. TAKAGI GROUP continues to evolve and deepen its mission, transforming from a company that simply builds buildings into one that creates together with society and local communities.
